During her talk at the 13th annual NCRG Conference on Gambling and Addiction, Alexandre Laudet, Ph.D., stated that the science of addiction needs to be complemented with the science of recovery. After the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) last week, many experts have weighed in on the practical implications of this legislation regarding the prevention and treatment of addictive disorders. From federal entities such as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to national mental health organizations such as the American Psychological Association, the statements issued clearly examine the overall impact of the ACA on mental health treatment. How does this historic ruling relate the field of addictions? The experts suggest the answer lies in three applications: integration of services, enhancing prevention initiatives and a new model of recovery services.

NCRG Insider Interview with Dr. Scott Teitelbaum: Addiction and Recovery

Dr. Scott TeitelbaumA personal struggle with addiction and his own road to recovery led Dr. Scott Teitelbaum to build a nationally recognized addiction treatment program at the University of Florida College of Medicine. At the NCRG Conference on Gambling and Addiction, Dr. Teitelbaum explained more about his own recovery process and how it informs his research and clinical practices.  Dr. Teitelbaum is the vice chair and the chief of addiction medicine in the department of psychiatry at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Dr. Teitelbaum is also the medical director of the Florida Recovery Center.
