Long-Term Grants

Through the Institute for Research on Gambling Disorders, the National Center for Responsible Gaming (NCRG) provides long-term funding for innovative, multidisciplinary research at the NCRG Centers of Excellence in Gambling Research.

The first two NCRG Centers of Excellence, located at Yale University and the University of Minnesota, received research grants in 2009. The grants provide $402,500 over a three-year period. For more information about how NCRG Centers of Excellence are selected and the specific research being conducted at the Centers, visit the Center of Excellence information page on the Institute’s Web site.

In addition to the NCRG Centers of Excellence program, from 1996 through 2009, the NCRG supported groundbreaking research at the Division on Addictions at Cambridge Health Alliance, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, through a long-term grant totaling more than $7 million. The Division’s research program, led by Dr. Howard Shaffer of Harvard Medical School, has resulted in seminal findings on the prevalence of gambling disorders in the U.S. and Canada; the health risks of casino employees; the first national study of college gambling behaviors and institutional policies; a framework for understanding gambling as a public health issue; an innovative brief intervention for individuals concerned about their gambling; the nature of addiction; and the impact of new gaming opportunities on communities, among many other research advances.
